Who it suits

  • Lines that form when the face moves, such as frown lines between the brows.
  • People who want a change that is temporary and does not need recovery time.
  • People who are comfortable coming back every few months to keep the effect.

Talk to a clinician first if

  • Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. Cleveland Clinic says not to get the treatment in these cases.
  • Anyone with a neuromuscular disease, drooping eyelids, or weak facial muscles.
  • Anyone with a skin infection where the injection would go, or a known allergy to a botulinum toxin product.

What a visit is like

  1. Consult

A licensed provider asks about your goals, health history, and medicines. This is the time to ask which product they use and who will inject it.

  2. Plan

The provider marks the muscles to treat and explains how much product is planned. Different brands are measured in different units, so a unit count only compares within one brand.

  3. Treatment

Small injections go into the chosen muscles. No anesthesia is required, and the injections may sting briefly.

  4. Follow-up

Ask what to avoid afterward and who to call with concerns. Cleveland Clinic advises not rubbing or pressing the area for 12 hours.

Timeline

  1. Day 0

Injections take a short visit. You can usually return to work and most activities right away. 25

  2. Days 1 to 7

Effects begin one to two days after injection and build during the first week. Most people notice a change within 3 to 7 days. 64

  3. Weeks 1 to 2

Full results are usually visible within about 10 to 14 days. 5

  4. Months 3 to 4

The effect fades as muscles regain movement. Many people repeat the treatment to keep the look. 46

Recovery and risks

There is no recovery period for most people. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says not to rub or massage the treated areas, because that could move the toxin to other areas and cause short-term weakness or drooping. Cleveland Clinic suggests avoiding hard exercise for 24 hours.

Common side effects

  • Bruising, pain, redness, or swelling where the needle went in. 35
  • Headache or flu-like symptoms. 3
  • Temporary drooping or facial weakness, such as a drooping eyelid. 35

More serious risks

  • In rare cases the toxin can spread beyond the injection area. The FDA label lists muscle weakness, double vision, drooping eyelids, and trouble swallowing, reported hours to weeks after injection. 6

What changes the price

  • The product used, since brands are priced and measured differently.
  • How many units are needed for the areas treated.
  • Who injects, and whether the price is per unit, per area, or per visit.
  • The region, the practice, and whether a membership or package applies.
